On March 7, more than 200 restaurants will donate 25 per cent of their total food sales from breakfast, lunch and dinner to A Loving Spoonful, which provides free, nutritious meals to people with HIV/AIDS, and Friends for Life, a non-profit agency that provides complementary therapies, such as massage, to people with a serious illness confined to their home.

This marks the 19th year for the popular fundraising initiative, which sees restaurants from Whistler to White Rock taking part. New this year is the Vancity 20 per cent Off Tuesdays Savings Card, which will be provided to diners taking part in Dining Out For Life at 14 participating Lower Mainland restaurants. The card offers a 20 per cent saving on food purchased every Tuesday at these restaurants until February 2014. The card is described as a small token of appreciation for guests who visit these restaurants on Dining Out For Life event night.

Diners who take part March 7 can win one of three prizes: a luxury weekend in Victoria, a night out at the River Rock Casino Resort, or a 麻豆传媒映画sports package including tickets to a B.C. Lions game, autographed Lions gear, four tickets to a 麻豆传媒映画Giants game and four tickets to a 麻豆传媒映画Whitecaps match. For a list of participating restaurants, visit diningoutforlife.com/Vancouver.

Downtown

Also taking place March 7 is a fundraiser for the first urban school in B.C dedicated to aboriginal teaching. Macdonald elementary offers a specialized core curriculum with an emphasis on First Nations culture and learning. Enjoy performances by the Carnival Band, Helen Duguay Band and Bitterly Divine at 麻豆传媒映画FanClub, 1050 Granville St., March 7. The event includes live and silent auctions. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Oakridge

The city and park board will mark International Womens Day with a reception to celebrate this years Remarkable Women honourees March 8, at 7 p.m. at VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, 5151 Oak St.

The Remarkable Women poster series launched in 2008 to recognize 麻豆传媒映画women who have served their community in an exceptional way. This years series honours the contributions of women to local food, including production, food security, policy, education and research. The posters are on display in community centres, libraries, schools and other public buildings leading up to International Womens Day.
