You've seen them-colourfully painted salmon, orcas and eagles adorning storefronts and street corners across the city. Now they have company. A small army of 33 replica terracotta warriors was unleashed this week on Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond, with a lone soldier on its way to Whitehorse, Yukon. On Tuesday, 29 life-size warriors each painted by a different artist were on display at Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden. One of the terracotta warriors, in this case the one painted by artists James Tan, will remain on display at the Chinese Garden on Pender Street. The warriors will be auctioned off Sept. 27 with proceeds going to Easter Seals Camps for children with disabilities and B.C. Lions Society Easter Seal Houses. There's an Easter Seals house on the west side of Oak Street near King Edward, where other figures including a bear and eagle are already on display. Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden received yet another award recently. On April 13, the popular attraction was named the Canadian Tourism Garden of the Year 2012 by the Canadian Garden Tourism Council.

As part of Kerrisdale Carnival Days this Saturday, April 28, there will be a Little League parade with marching bands starting at 10 a.m. and marching along West 41st Avenue between Maple and Larch streets. (Let's all say a little prayer to the sun gods for these kids.) But wait, there's more. Horse and carriage rides are being offered between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from the clock at the corner of Yew and West 41st, while the Pooch Poetry Contest will start at 12:30 p.m. Sign up to read an original poem about your dog at noon at north Yew Street and West 41st Avenue. The first 30 budding poets will have the chance to read their original poems to what I'm sure will be an enthusiastic crowd. Note, all poets must be accompanied by their on-leash dog.

May is Asian Heritage Month and there are numerous events taking place across the city. The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Asian Heritage Month Society is launching the festivities with a Pan-Asian inter-arts performance showcasing both local and visiting artist who explore the intersection between music, word, dance, multimedia and cultural traditions. The Magical Encounter takes place May 4 and 5 at the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at SFU Woodwards. The performance kicks off the 16th annual exploreASIAN 2012 Festival, which highlights Asian dance, music, visual arts and poetry.
