A rare ceremonial club, once owned by Captain James Cook, has been returned to Canada and now rests at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of B.C. The club is the last remaining object from explorer Cooks personal collection not housed in a public museum. Cook received the club as a gift from the Nuu-chah-nulth people of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Islands west coast in 1778234 years ago. The club is considered the oldest known and most finely executed of this style. Its carved from yew wood in the shape of a hand holding a sphere. Like much of Cooks collection, the club found its way into the private Leverian Museum in London, England, where it was sold in 1806, passing through several collections until it was obtained by the Vancouver-based Audain Foundation for the Visual Arts and returned to B.C. Michael Audain purchased the club for $827,000 on behalf of the foundation and arranged for its donation to MOA.
