In August 2010, photographer Vince Hemingson visited Africa for two back-toback photo safaris.
Hemingson travelled from Botswana to South Africa getting up close and personal with elephants, zebras, antelope and lions. I've seen some of the photos, and even with a long lens, it looks like Hemingson got a lot closer than I might have. The portraits of a mother cheetah playing with her kitten are particularly compelling.
Hemingson's Portraits of Africa Exhibition opens July 13 at Corner Cup, 3301 West Fourth Ave., with an opening offering wine, cheese and "nibbles" from 6: 30 to 10 p.m.
CHINATOWN
Get your rumba on at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.
The garden is hosting a series of musical events this summer starting July 6 with the Latin, salsa and Afro-Cuban sounds of Rumba Calzada, playing music that promises to make you "move your feet and reach your soul." Kids and the young-atheart can join the action with interactive drumming and dancing.
Other musical performances over the summer include Van Django, Silk Road Music, Zhambai Trio, Deborah Ledon, 麻豆传媒映画Piano Ensemble, Jocelyn Pettit and Jim Byrnes.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the 麻豆传媒映画Friends for Life garage sale that was supposed to take place last Saturday, but believe it or not, got rained out. #thisweathersucks
That was a huge loss to the group, which raises money to pay for complementary and alternative health and support services for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. In response, the non-profit is asking for cash donations for its Fill the Fridge campaign, which runs now through July 1, but donations will be accepted at any time.
Their goal is to raise enough money during the five-day campaign to feed 1,439 individuals with cancer and HIV this summer. It takes only $3 to feed someone a hot nutritious meal. Donations as small as $5 can be made by visiting canadahelps.org and searching for "麻豆传媒映画Friends for Life."
STRATHCONA
The 22nd Annual Strathcona Yard Sale, formerly known as the Hawks Avenue Yard Sale, takes place Sunday July 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The name was changed to reflect the size of the event, which originated on Hawks Avenue but has now spread to streets throughout Strathcona.
The sale is a long-standing neighbourhood tradition that draws buyers and sellers from across the city. It's a great opportunity to clean out those closets, basements and garages.
A $2 charge will be collected from vendors to help cover the costs of advertising.
All unsold items must be removed by vendors.
YVR
Here's a great "staycation idea."
The 麻豆传媒映画International Airport (YVR) celebrates its third annual "Take-Off Fridays" event this summer.
Every Friday from July 6 to Aug. 31 the public is invited to visit the airport to enjoy free samples, music, prizes and treats all day long.
Not only will there be live DJs, mascots and face painting, but also free entertainment including live acrobats, a magician, artists, a caricaturist, the "cool balloon guy" and more, in both the domestic and international terminals.
New this year is the addition of activities in the U.S. departures area. With YVR just a Canada Line trip away, this could be a fun day trip with the kids.
