A non-profit organization dedicated to teaching city kids about growing and preparing their own nutritious food is asking the question, What can a loonie buy?

Growing Chefs is partnering with restaurants across the city as well as some in Metro Vancouver, for the Eat. Give. Grow. 2012 campaign that sees $1 of certain menus items donated to the program for the month of June. The concept is simple. Each restaurant is offering a specially marked item on its menu and if its ordered, $1 is donated to the program. Last year that amounted to almost $7,000 dedicated to Growing Chefs school-based programs in Vancouver, Penticton and London, Ont.

According to Growing Chefs, one loonie can purchase a packet of bean seeds, a growing pot, a trowel or a plant tray. It can also buy a child the knowledge and ability to grow his or her own food for life. For a complete list of restaurants visit the program link at growingchefs.ca.

Kitsilano

Kitsilano Secondary Schools Kits Studio is presenting John Lazarus Village of Idiots.

The fact the school has been able to pull off a year-end production in the midst of teachers job action is remarkable on its own. Village of Idiots is a Canadian adaptation of Yiddish fold tales that tell the story of Yosef, a Russian army deserter.

Kits Studio is also traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland, to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe, the largest theatre festival in the world. Village of Idiots runs June 13 and 14 at Kits secondary, 2550 West 10th Ave. Matinees are at 10:30 a.m. and evening performances at 7 p.m. Tickets at the door.

I dont typically include events in this column not taking place in Vancouver, unless it includes a picture of a cowboy, but the Burrard Yacht Clubs Sixth Annual Classic Boat and Car Show is in support of a local program I know is of interest to many Courier readers.

The show raises funds for the Disabled Sailing Association of B.C., which provides sailing programs and instructions to persons with significant physical disabilities. The boat and car show takes place at the Burrard Yacht Club June 9 at 10 Gostick Place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance is by donation to the Disabled Sailing Association of B.C.
