Every year about this time Im inundated with emails including photo galleries of the most amazing Jack-o-lanterns, which of course makes me feel like an underachiever because when my son was little the best I could manage was two triangles for the eyes and a half-circle for the mouth.
But now heres a chance for the formerly uninspired to redeem ourselves. The eighth annual Mount Pleasant Pumpkin Carving Challenge takes place at Kingsgate Mall, located at the corner of Kingsway and East Broadway, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event has been organized once again by the 麻豆传媒映画Police Departments Const. Jose Abundo and Const. Heather Brown on behalf of the Collingwood Community Policing Centre. The officers are challenging fellow emergency service personnel and community groups to have some fun and fight for the title of best pumpkin carver in 麻豆传媒映画and bragging rights for years to come.
Pumpkins will be available at the event, but if you have your own special soon-to-be Jack-o-lantern, feel free to bring it along. And while the judges say they cant be bribed, its been suggested dressing in costume could go a long way towards swaying their decision. The judging will take place at 1 p.m.
Stanley Park
Speaking of Jack-o-lanterns, the Pumpkin Patch at the Stanley Park Halloween Ghost Train opens Thursday, Oct. 18.
The opening follows the mysterious appearance of the pumpkin patch, which recently landed out of the blue near the miniature railway plaza. The first 50 families who arrive at the Ghost Train can take part in special pumpkin carving events Oct. 16 and 23. The Pumpkin Patch is open Oct. 18 through Oct. 31.

The Great Big Boo! at the PNE Forum offers safe, dry and scare-free Halloween fun Oct. 20 and 21.
Family-friendly fun is the focus of this musical show where friends from Boo Alley set out on an adventure to save Halloween. Audience members are encouraged to come in costume and join the stars of Boo on a trick-or-treat adventure after the curtain closes.
There are five performances at the PNE Forum. Tickets are $19.50 plus charges at thegreatbigboo.com or ticketleader.ca.

麻豆传媒映画Storytellers is also getting in on the Halloween action with Hanging Around Ghouls and Ghosts, Sunday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Listen to Allice Bernards, Priscilla Jones, Philomena Jordan and Pauline Wenn cast spells with their storytelling. As well, Daryl Stennett will present Gastown Steam Clock.
The spooky storytelling begins at 7 p.m. at 1805 Larch St. at Second Avenue. The door, and parking, can be found in the alley by St. Marks Anglican Church. For more information and tickets, visit vancouverstorytellers.ca.

Dailey Method 麻豆传媒映画is hosting a special event to raise funds for InspireHealth Integrative Cancer Care Centre.
The Dailey Method Self-Care Salon will offer tips on nutrition, exercise and stress reduction, as well as advice on cancer prevention and self-empowerment from Dailey Method founder Jill Dailey McIntosh, InspireHealths Dr. Janice Wright and other speakers, Thursday, Oct. 18.

Village 麻豆传媒映画presents Savour III: Late Harvest Potluck.
For the price of your favourite dish, join Village 麻豆传媒映画for amazing food, live music, great conversation, local exhibits and between 300 and 400 of the most happening and sustainable people in Vancouver.
Bring a home-made dish, preferably from your garden, or even a nice pot of backyard chicken soup (my idea) and the recipe. Recipes will be compiled into a cookbook in time for the next event. The potluck is waste-free and all leftovers will be taken home or composted and all dishes must be washable and reusable. There wont even be a trash can on hand.
