VanDusen Garden

Last year I watched on TV as The Real Housewives of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»converged on the Shaughnessy Concours d'Elegance show at VanDusen Botanical Garden as part of the Luxury and Supercar Weekend.

It wasn't pretty, but the cars featured at the show certainly were, particularly compared to my 1998 Toyota Corolla, which gets great gas mileage but needs a new hood.

I'm hoping to spot a Housewife or two this weekend as I wander the lawns of Van Dusen checking out the largest collection of new luxury and supercars in Canada. The weekend also offers a fashion show highlighting the latest trends from around the world. The show runs all weekend. For a complete schedule and tickets visit luxurysupercar.com.

PNE

I find it hard to believe, considering the weather we've had this August, but apparently attendance was down at the PNE this year.

It didn't feel like that Sunday when I attended, but according to PNE spokesperson Laura Ballance, the 2012 Fair saw 763,689 visitors, down five per cent from the 803,598 who attended last year. Ballance said the decrease was expected given the strength of the Canadian dollar, which typically translates to a drop in tourism.

And just in case you were wondering, the number of mini donuts sold at the PNE this year was 2.4 million, 20,000 pounds of fried onions were used on burgers at Jimmy's Lunch Stand and the number of twofootlong "Double Dare Ya" hotdogs sold was 502.

MOUNT PLEASANT

Football fans will want to check out the Grey Cup 100 Train, which will be open to the public Sunday, Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pacific Central Train Station, 1150 Station St.

In honour of the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup football championship, the train is visiting 100 communities across Canada before delivering the historic trophy to Toronto in November. That's when the 100th Grey Cup game and festival will take place.

The train is wrapped in iconic Grey Cup images and features a showcase car for the Cup itself, a museum car that captures a century of football history and a team car that celebrates today's teams and athletes.

MOUNT PLEASANT

The third annual Autumn Shift Festival takes place along Main Street between Broadway and Twelfth Avenue, east and west, Saturday, Sept. 15 from noon to 6 p.m.

The free, family-friendly festival celebrates the shift in seasons and increased awareness about sustainability, eating local and urban gardening. Enjoy live music while checking out more than 70 booths, fun activities and a community fashion show at 3: 30 p.m. at 11th Avenue at Main.

KITSILANO

I previously mentioned in this column I attended the East Side version of Tasting Plates Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and how much I enjoyed it.

Now blogger and foodie Richard Wolak of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Foodster is following that up with Tasting Plates Kitsilano.

Once you buy a ticket for one of these events, you're given a passport with a list of participating restaurants and specialty shops offering small tastes from their menu. Consider it a gastronomical scavenger hunt. We couldn't begin to eat everything offered to us during the summer version of this event. Tickets are $30 with partial proceeds to Farm Folk/City Folk.

Just some of the 10 restaurants, cafes and food trucks participating this time around include Atithi Indian Cuisine, Chocolate Arts and The Bibo. The action begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 12. For a complete list of participants and menus, visit vancouver foodster. com.

DOWNTOWN

The weather is going to be great this weekend, so if you're close to Seymour and Helmcken streets Saturday, Sept. 8 between noon and 4 p.m., drop by My Sister's Closet, the social enterprise of Battered Women's Support Services, for a day of art, music and healing.

Several contemporary artists will be on hand Saturday, including Jay Peachy, who will create sidewalk art, and potter Laura Harrison will create pieces live. Local healer "Ocean" will also be on hand offering sound healing sessions.

My Sister's Closet is located at 1092 Seymour St.
