The annual Davie Day celebration has expanded this year to become a full-fledged festival Sept. 8 including, wait for it, the Urban Rec Dodgeball Tournament.

The six cage match courts will be set up in the middle of Davie Street between Cardero and Nicola for a round robin of dodgeball the organizers promise will be unlike anything seen before. The tournament runs between 1 to 4 p.m. and the cost of entry per team is $140 plus HST.

If dodgeball isnt your thing, theres lots more on tap during the day-long event, including the Heritage Walking Tour of the Mole Hill housing development and the Burrard Stage show emceed by drag royalty Joan-E, who will also perform. Other performers taking to the stage include Really Rod, Deep Seated, Dating Myself, Matthew Presidente, The QLUTCH Project and DJ Zak Santiago. The Denman Stage will be emceed by Ryan Steele and will showcase DJ performances by Ronnie Mejia, Nina Mendoza, Michael Fraser and MY!GAY!HUSBAND!

Theres also lots for families to do during West End Fest, which runs from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, between Burrard and Denman streets. For a complete schedule visit westendbia.com.

Kerrisdale

I have no idea why Kerrisdale became this citys hot spot for roller derby, but roller derby central it is.

The Terminal City Rollergirls 2012 season is almost over, but fans of the sport need not worry because the best is yet to come. The tightest season in the leagues history is coming to a close with a bang, and a few stitches, as all four house teams battle one last time for roller derby supremacy.

Roller derby fans will gather at the Kerrisdale Arena, 5670 East Blvd. at 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. start for epic battles between the Faster Pussycats, Bad Reputations, Public Frenemy and Riot Girls.

The Terminal City Rollergirls is using the event to raise funds for the Take a Hike Foundation, which supports at-risk and under privileged youth by selling trees for $10, which will be planted in October as part of the Trees 4 Teens campaign. Roller derby isnt the only happening event taking place in Kerrisdale this month.

The Kerrisdale Community Choir is looking for new members and is inviting those who can carry a tune, and those who cant, to join the fun beginning Sept. 13 at 9:30 a.m. at the Kerrisdale Community Centre, 5851 West Blvd. The choir entertains across Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»with Broadway tunes and hits from the 1920s to today.

Citywide

On Wednesday I wrote about the Fifth Annual Accordion Noir Festival, which takes place Sept. 13 through 16. I mentioned events would be taking place at the Grandview Legion, upstairs at 2205 Commercial Dr., but as it turns out there are other venues involved as well. Following the tour, participants are invited to mingle, share stories, and enjoy food and non-alcoholic beverages at the historic Avalon Dairy. The tour begins at the Avalon Farmhouse, 5805 Wales Streetat 43rd Avenue.
