There's a lot going on leading up to Christmas, including concerts, benefits and numerous craft sales, some I'll mention here and others that will be included in a future article by Courier arts reporter Cheryl Rossi.

There's a lot going on leading up to Christmas, including concerts, benefits and numerous craft sales, some I'll mention here and others that will be included in a future article by Courier arts reporter Cheryl Rossi. So if you've been searching for a sock monkey hat for that special someone, now's the time.

NOV. 17

Yesterday, Nov. 17, would have been Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»historian Chuck Davis' 57th birthday so it's fitting his book, completed posthumously after his death a year ago, will launch next month. Davis is famous for capturing this city's history in print and was affectionately known as Vancouver's "collective memory." This most recent book, The Chuck Davis History of Metropolitan Vancouver, is his birthday present to the city for Vancouver's 125th year. After Davis' death, Courier columnist Allen Garr helped complete the book and is acting as its spokesperson. The public launch of The Chuck Davis History of Metropolitan Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»takes place Dec. 6 at the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Public Library, 350 West Georgia St. at 7 p.m.

NOV. 18, 19 AND 20

The always popular Eastside Culture Crawl runs this weekend from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The crawl sees artists living or working in the area bounded by Main Street and Victoria Drive north of First Avenue open their studio doors to the public. For more information, go to eastsideculturecrawl.com.

NOV. 24

The second annual Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Christmas Market opens its doors once again in the plaza at Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Nov. 24 to Dec. 24, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. This market is fashioned after an authentic German Christmas village, complete with carollers, crafts, beer, sausage, mulled wine, wooden toys, organic baby clothes and a Christmas Carousel, new to the event this year- and hopefully, those sock monkey hats. NOV. 25

The Lord Byng Symphony Orchestra and Byng Arts Mini School present their concert series, beginning Nov. 25 at that secondary school's theatre, 3939 West 16th Ave., at 7: 30 p.m. For more information and tickets, go to lbso.ca.

Also Nov. 25 is a fundraising concert at Edgewater Casino to benefit newly disabled veterans and programs or agencies that assist veterans and first responders, including police, ambulance and firefighters. The concert is sponsored by the B.C. Military Music Society, the Citadel Society and recently formed Equitas Society. Performing at the benefit is local crooner Phil Moriarity, who also organized the event, Elvis impersonator Eli "Tigerman" Williams and salsa performers Patrick and Scarlet. Tickets are $25 and available through philmoriarity.ca. [email protected]
