Car makers bring their eco-best to auto show

This year's Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­International Auto Show offers guests an opportunity to test drive new eco-friendly vehicles from Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Lexus and more.

The "Green Ride and Drive" experience will take place in front of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Convention Centre West on the Canada Place roadway and participants can reserve their test drives onsite on a first-come basis during the auto show March 25 to 31.

From hybrids to completely electric, zero-emission vehicles, each manufacturer offers their own technology, design and perspective on clean energy transportation. The Green Ride and Drive will showcase several of these new automobiles. The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­International Auto Show is the largest auto event in Western Canada. . ArtStarts on Saturdays presents Seed Tapestry: For the Birds, a free art workshop for kids and families. With a "one-mile diet" approach to sourcing art materials, Sharon Kallis works to discover the material potential in a local landscape. Participating families will work together making a large quilt-like pattern on the ground, using birdseeds and flower petals as the palette. Work will travel inside and out as weather permits so dress accordingly. ArtStarts on Saturdays is a free workshop series for families at the ArtStarts Gallery, 808 Richards St.

Seed Tapestry: For the Birds sessions take place March 30 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. For more information, visit artstarts.com/free-weekend-workshops. The workshops are ideal for children aged five to 12, but all ages are welcome. Please arrive 10 minutes before each workshop in order to register.

A free panel discussion, What's Coming Down the Pipeline?, takes place at 7 p.m. March 11 at Sunset Community Centre, 6810 Main St. The "Tanker Town Hall," presented by Neighbours for a Sustainable Future, features hosts Sven Biggs from Tanker Free B.C. and University of B.C. professor Glen Coulthard of Yellowknives Dene First Nation to discuss Kinder Morgan, Enbridge, and other pipeline plans. Saint Mark's College is hosting a free public lecture entitled "When the Pope Resigns" by Archbishop Michael Miller, March 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The lecture will cover the context and implications of Pope Benedict's recent resignation. Miller is a specialist on the papacy, having served as a full professor, dean of theology and then president of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. Miller completed his doctor of sacred theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he completed his dissertation on the papacy. Miller is also the author of such books as What Are They Saying about Papal Primacy? For more information or to register for this free lecture, call 604-8224463. What better way to show your support for cancer research than an evening spent drinking whisky.

Tip a Wee Dram is in support of The Ride to Conquer Cancer, which benefits the B.C. Cancer Foundation. The event includes 13 tasting bars offering more than 60 varieties of whisky, gourmet food prepared to pair with each tasting, and silent and live auctions. A Scottish theme complements both the event and venue. Tip a Wee Dram takes place at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson St., March 8 from 7 to 10 p.m. Only 300 tickets will be sold to the event, sponsored by Edgemont Fine Wines and Spirits and Ales. PACIFIC SPIRIT PARK

The annual Night Quest event in Pacific Spirit Park takes place March 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. The popular annual event allows visitors to explore the magic and mystery of the park at night as they make their way along lantern-lit trails. Everyone is then invited to gather around the campfire for more fun. Bring a lantern or flashlight and give yourself at least an hour to complete the walk.

The journey, presented in partnership with the Pacific Spirit Park Society, begins at 4914 West 16th Ave., 400 metres west of Blanca Street.
