Following an impromptu and successful in Stevetson in April, the City of Richmond is planning a likewise event this Canada Day.
Dubbed the Steveston Cup, city officials will close First Avenue at Moncton Street to foot traffic for a six-hour tournament on July 1, in the midst of Richmond Canada Day and Steveston Salmon Festival activities.
Hosted by popular Canucks mascot Fin, the free, three-on-three tournament is open to children ages nine to 17 years who are invited to show their patriotic pride while playing this favourite Canadian past time. Participation is free; however, registration is required, according to the city.
The tournament will include games for children in two divisions from ages nine to 11 and 12 to 17 years old. The first game starts at 10 a.m. while single-elimination playoff games start at 3 p.m. Each team has a minimum of four players, including a goalie and maximum of seven players per team. All teams are guaranteed three games.
The stated focus of the tournament is fun and sportsmanship.
