The age of the carrier pigeon has ended, but never fear - the carrier eagle has arrived in its place. And it’s bringing beer.

On June 5th, two winners of Phillips’ “Beer from a Bird” contest received Phillips Pilsners from a fake eagle attached to a drone. Although the original idea was to have an actual bald eagle named Hercules deliver the drinks, those plans were swapped out for a more high-tech method after the Ministry grounded Hercules.

Not one to be held back by red tape, Hercules actually piloted the drone himself, and delivered the golden bounty to the contest winners. To watch the whole event unfold, check out the video below.

Over the past three years, the brewing company has been recognized for their sustainable and green business approach. The importance that Phillips places on community also plays into why they chose to hold such a bizarre contest, and of course, they wanted to do something fun and original.

As put by Matt Phillips, founder of the brewery: “When we consider why we should do something, we often find the best answer to be “why not”.That’s why we transformed a 53’ tractor trailer into the ultimate mobile pub, and why we’re the only brewery in Canada to malt our own barley in-house. Plus, eagles are majestic, bold, and beautiful; beer is often the same.”

The contest lined up with Phillips’ values as a brewery and malt house that sticks to old-fashioned standards, and it provided a couple of Canadians with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. At the end of the day, they might be the only people on the planet who can honestly say that they drank beer delivered by a fake, bird-operated bird.
