There are now 144,289 cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in B.C. after health officials announced 708 new cases Monday (May 31).
From Friday to Saturday there were 258 cases, from Saturday to Sunday there were 238 and from Sunday to Monday there were 212.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry started the conference by making an emotional statement about the discovery of the remains of 215 children found buried on the site of a former residential school in Kamloops.
"We must make no mistake that while these deaths happened in the past, our systems and laws continue to perpetuate racism and discrimination that hurts Indigenous people in countless ways."
Henry reported that there have been 140 new cases of COVID-19 in the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Coastal Health region, 394 in the Fraser Health region, 18 in the Island Health region, 131 in the Interior Health region, 42 in the Northern Health Region and one new case in a person who resides outside of Canada.
There is no update on the variants of concern in the province.
There have been 11 new COVID-19 related deaths, for a total of 1,703 deaths from the virus. One of the deaths was a person in their 40s.
There has been another case of VITT - vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia - in a man in his 30s on Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Island.
There are 2,953 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.
Of the active cases, 249 individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 78 of whom are in intensive care.
3,250,116 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C.; 179,954 of these are second doses. 66.1 per cent of eligible British Columbians over 12 years old have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in B.C.
