Stick in Link: Fifty-contract cap; family first for Boeser

Also, Garrett loves burgers; Boucher loves shots; Canucks grasping for grit? Expansion Draft details

Stick in Link

It鈥檚 time for 鈥淪tick in Link鈥, the feature where we just plug in a bunch of stuff written by others! Featuring a smattering of links from around the Smylosphere and beyond every Tuesday and Thursdayish. Warning: our links are so hyper, they change colour when exposed to heat. (Have something for us to share in the next edition? E-mail us at [email protected] or tweet us @passittobulis. Or tell us some other way. The point is: we'll probably link it if we know about it.)

  • Brock Boeser, like Jim Carrey, George Carlin and Andy Kaufman, is a character guy. This piece by Iain MacIntyre details that there's a lot more to this winger than just sweet hockey hair and goal scoring prowess. When it's all said and done, he does it for his family. []
  • In "we could have told you that" news, Patrick Johnston confirms that Reid Boucher drives shot production better than anyone on the team. Boucher = shots. Additionally, unconfirmed rumours indicate he's a strong supporter of gun ranges, flu immunization, and Lil Jon. []
  • The Canucks are going to China, officially! It's been rumoured for a long time, but we now have confirmation that 麻豆传媒映画will face off twice in the Middle Kingdom, one game in Beijing and the other in Shanghai. Both games will be against the Kings. []
  • Ryan Miller is up for the Masterson Trophy, awarded to a player who embodies the qualities of sportsmanship, perseverence and dedication to the sport. After this season (during which he hit 350 career wins) I'd say he's awfully deserving of it. []
  • Good news: after making a dumb move, the NHL has shown itself to be capable of correcting it. The NHL Expansion Draft protection lists will be made public after all. I can understand why most GMs would prefer to keep it private, but do they ever think of the hockey bloggers? Clearly not! []
  • 麻豆传媒映画really missed Derek Dorsett and Erik Gudbranson this season, or so says Ben Kuzma. Gap control only gets you so far, and toughness has been in short supply. []
  • So, like my sidewalk during the recent blizzard, are the Canucks lacking in grit? Is a healthy dose of truculence what the team needs to become harder to play against? Janik Beichler says nah. Physicality is great, but it's better to be good at hockey. []
  • I hope you're fond of the (Richard) Bachman. He may not be the goalie this city asked for, but he's the one this city needs, especially now that Jacob Markstrom will be having season ending surgery for a knee injury suffered during the Canucks Superskills competition. This bad break happened during the Breakaway Relay. []
  • If there's a proverbial canary in the coal mine this off-season, it's proverbially named Erik Gudbranson. What the Canucks do with the big defenceman will signal their level of commitment to a rebuild, and it could be the making or breaking of Jim Benning. []
  • J.D. Burke looks at the recent signing of Griffen Molino and discusses the difficulties of the 50-contract cap imposed by the NHL. When it comes to signing longshot free agents out of the CHL or college ranks, the Canucks, like Skytrain travellers trying to select a non-grody seat, should choose carefully. []
  • Rob Williams is a hero for this one. Here's colour commentator John Garrett stuffing his face with burgers. []
  • Last thing. If you're browsing Reddit on the train, know that fellow Redditors are everywhere. And if they're halfway decent Redditors, they'll mess with you. []
