Stick in Link: Drance goes down to Florida; tanking time?

Also, Tortorella's success, Troy Stecher's two dads, and the songs that bind us together.

Stick in Link

It’s time for “Stick in Link”, the feature where we just plug in a bunch of stuff written by others! Featuring a smattering of links from around the Smylosphere and beyond every Tuesday and Thursdayish. Warning: our links are so hyper, they change colour when exposed to heat. (Have something for us to share in the next edition? E-mail us at [email protected] or tweet us @passittobulis. Or tell us some other way. The point is: we'll probably link it if we know about it.)

  • The biggest pseudo-Canucks news of the day: friend of the blog Thomas Drance has been hired by the Florida Panthers as their VP of Communications and PR. Long-time Bulies may remember his regular “Drance Numbers” column with PITB when he was early in his career. This represents yet another Canucks Army writer hired by the Panthers. Congratulations! []
  • How has John Tortorella succeeded in Columbus where he failed in Vancouver? Aside from PDO, I mean. Aaron Portzline has some answers. []
  • Iain Macintyre is amazed the Canucks are succeeding without Derek Dorsett and Erik Gudbranson, thinks Anton Rodin needs more ice time, and thinks scratching Sven Baertschi was the right thing to do to get him going. I’m on board with one of these thoughts. []
  • Troy Stecher has two dads and they’re both named Sedin. []
  • The Canucks are winning games, which raises the question: to tank or not to tank? That is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous lottery odds or to take arms against a sea of divisional foes and by opposing end them. []
  • On the pro-tank side, the performance of Nico Hischier at this year’s World Junior Championships. Hischier is expected to battle with Nolan Patrick to go first overall. []

  • Speaking of the World Juniors, Canucks prospect Lukas Jasek had a quiet tournament with no points, but I liked a lot of what I saw in his game: he’s good defensively, wins puck battles, and is excellent at cycling the puck. Janik Beichler thinks the Canucks should get him signed to an entry-level contract. []
  • It’s the Canucks player power rankings, which are, as always, delightful. But that’s boring. Maybe we need to stir up some blog beef here to keep things interesting. CHRIS TANEV IS RANKED SEVERAL SPOTS TOO LOW, GRAINNE! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER! That should do it. []
  • What songs bind us together as Canucks fans? This doesn’t delve deep into history, but looks at songs and music that have brought Canucks fans together over the last decade or so. Click not just for the nostalgia, but for the header image that makes it look like Shane O’Brien is singing backup vocals for Tom Cochrane. [±ŐĚý
  • This list of the top 10 Canucks stories of 2016 has the emergence of Markus Granlund as the fifth best story, which I’m not sure about, but maybe I’m missing something compelling there. But the rest of the list makes sense and it’s hard to argue with Bo Horvat at number one. []
