In a midseason press conference, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Canucks general manager Jim Benning expressed that the team needed two more years before they'll be ready to compete for a Stanley Cup. At this point, it looks like Benning will get at least one more year.
As rumours have swirled in recent weeks that changes might be coming to the Canucks' front office after one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Tuesday that Benning won't be one of those changes.
"Not sure what to expect for a timeline of announcements from the Canucks," read Friedman's tweet, "but word tonight is Jim Benning was given indication in the last 24 hours that he is to return."
Benning is currently one of the longer-tenured GMs in the NHL. Only ten GMs have been in their current position for longer than Benning, though all have seen more success on the ice. The Canucks have made the playoffs just twice with Benning as GM, though they went on a short-lived Cinderella run last season, getting one game away from the Western Conference Finals.
The team took a significant step back this season, with a distinct chance of finishing last in the all-Canadian North Division.
Friedman's report was met with consternation from Canucks fans on Twitter.
