After nearly two years of providing a pop-up ready storefront to Vancouver's entrepreneurs and artists, "The Chinatown Experiment" is over and relaunched as thisopenspace this morning.
So why rebrand now after only two years?
What started as an experiment has proven itself a viable and successful model. Since opening their doors on 434 Columbia St. in September 2012, the abandoned storefront has transformed into a pop-up ready space and hosted over 70 pop-up concepts during that time. It's been home to ten elopment style weddings in two days, the world's first café that repelled cell phone signals, and Vancouver's first handmade japanese knife shop - to name a few. The cool and the creative happens in this small 600sqft. store in Chinatown and it's received local and international coverage. But, their flagship storefront and idea playground is only one part of what they do...
This year, they've helped brands and artists find other temporary pop-up ready spaces around town in Gastown, South Granville, Mount Pleasant, and Fraserhood. They've helped their clients with promotion and press relations for their pop-up; and this summer they brought new Canadian brands to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»for the first time, including Alberta’s Knifewear and Wheat Kids & Babies. They've also played a hand in pop-up event production, most recently as part of the Niche Co Lab team to produce the first pop-up in a residential Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»home.
No longer just a small storefront in Chinatown, they needed a fresh identity to capture what they do. Their creative director, Yashar Nijati, says that the new brand name thisopenspace and their motto #roomtoplay captures the mission of providing an idea playground and fully supporting the creativity that happens inside. The full service pop-up production studio is the first of it's kind in Canada and the newly launched is live now - head on over and check it out.
