On Wednesday night, 15 visual artists and one writer invite us to play a game. "Portraits of Brief Encounters" are stories of run-in's, pass-by's, overhears, and introspections with Vancouverites and beyond, written by Cole Nowicki. Fifteen local artists, curated by Elliat Albrecht (BAF Gallery, Highway Magazine), have created original work based on new stories by Nowicki for a one-night art show. But there's a catch and a game to be played. Each guest receives a storybook with the objective of matching the stories to the artwork - and there are prizes to be won.
You can talk, team-up, hypothesize, cheat and connive your way into winning. There's room to write your guesses on the back of the storybook before you hand it in for grading. Each correct answer earns you $5 off a piece of original artwork at the show. All portraits are priced at $250 or below (all proceeds to the artists). Yup, that means you can earn up to $75 off in this game. There's also a book up for grabs. The grand prize 'Portraits of Brief Encounters' book is signed by all artists and includes 15 prints with accompanying stories. Just for playing the game, you get one ballot in the grand prize draw. Every 5, 10, and 15 correct guesses earns you another ballot. There's also bragging rights up for grabs and a few surprises in store.
Portraits of Brief Encounters: An Immersive Gallery Game is a concept developed by Yashar Nijati, Creative Director @thisopenspace. It was inspired by Nowicki's account and the weekly feature on . For the first time ever, Nowicki's stories are visualized independently by fifteen different artists. Five dollars gets you into the game with a story book, a raffle into the grand prize, and even a bookmark.
The art show and game is on for one night only Wednesday, November 12 from 6-11PM. A full list of participating artists and more information is available .
