If you're getting ready for your Thursday night gallery hop here's one that should be on your list. Tonight's the opening of Canadian artist Jason Curator's first solo exhibition "this exists" and it's going down in Chinatown.
While growing up in rural B.C. and Yukon, Jason took to art at a young age and found it a grounding escape to the change and uncertainty around him. In his early years, he had aspirations of becoming a comic book artist and animator. This can still be seen in the vibrant colours he uses today and in his drawings and illustrations. But it wasn't until his time at Emily Carr that he took a turn towards visual fine arts and abstract painting. When asked why abstract, Jason tells us that it allows him to express an emotion that cannot be articulated through any other medium. His work is dark, but there are layers of vibrancy and playful colours.
What we like about Jason's work is that you get sense of the individual through his art. For us, his pieces are an insight into his life and while we do not know Jason personally, it feels that we can connect with him through this medium. It was an easy decision to have this exhibition in our space, but it's been a long time coming. Jason first contacted us in the summer and we lost touch during our rebranding in early September. When we got back in touch with Jason, he thought we had given up on him - yet we're grateful that he hadn't given up on us. This is work that deserves to be seen and there's plenty of it.ÌýWith 18 large format pieces, he has filled the space beautifully and we're proud to be hosting Jason for his first solo exhibition.
