This Friday, May 2 The Chinatown Experiment welcomes abstract painters and improbable friends Yuri Padal and Michael Mahoney for a one-week exhibition at 434 Columbia St.

Michael became friends with Yuri after running into him on the street and buying one of his paintings. This chance meeting resulted in an enduring friendship and an ongoing passion for abstract painting firmly rooted in the strong Canadian abstract art tradition and history.

was born in 1949 in Kiev and studied painting under the direction of Nikolai Petrovich Glushenko. In 1976, Yuri studied in Rome at the Fresco school of art. Yuri moved to North America and lived in New York and Montreal before settling in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­where he now lives and works.

was born in Calgary and lived in various towns and cities throughout Ontario and the Prairies before moving to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­in the early 1980s. Michael won an award at the Calgary Stampede for art when he was in grade 3. He has painted in one form or another ever since.

The gallery opens this Friday, May 2 at 11am with the opening reception and live music from 5-9 pm. There is a preview on Thursday May 1 from 4-6pm, with regular gallery hours of 10am-7pm through Wednesday, May 7.
