50 Coffees #46: Mikey Scott

46 weeks ago I read a theory that going for 50 coffees with people you've never met is the entrepreneur's equivalent to the theory that doing anything for 10,000 hours will make you an expert on it.

COFFEE #46

Name: Mikey Scott

Occupation: Global Marketing Director

Beverage: Latte

46 weeks ago I read a that going for 50 coffees with people you've never met is the entrepreneur's equivalent to the that doing anything for 10,000 hours will make you an expert on it. While I get the idea, 50 coffees is far easier than practicing something for ten years, and while I'm far from lazy I decided to set out on a fairly simple mission: over 50 weeks I'm inviting 50 interesting Vancouverites, most of whom I have never met before, to go for coffee. I'm using this as an exercise in networking for myself and for V.I.A. while also using it as a platform to introduce you to some people who are doing really cool stuff in the city you live in.

Meet Mikey Scott. Former professional snowboarder turned marketing maven. One of the most driven, intelligent and thoughtful humans I've met through the Action Sports industry over the last 15 years. He's managed marketing for DC Shoes, No Limits Distribution, and more than a handful of clients through the agency he founded, , and out of which he launched a super interesting project.

I must confess and apologize again for taking you to coffee not with a stranger but with someone whom I was acquainted with prior to shooting this photo below, but there are folks I know whom I really want to introduce you to and this is sometimes the perfect venue for it.

Mikey's latest project, one that is taking up all of his time, is his work as the Global Marketing Director of Herschel Supply Co. Lots of locals that I talk to aren't aware that it's actually a Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»company (I them briefly last week), and what excites me about Mikey's work with them (beyond the awesomeness of the upcoming projects he shared with me that I can't share with you just yet) is that he's taken his experience from the somewhat-niche industry of Action Sports and is using it to tailor marketing for a company that appeals to a much broader consumer range. Herschel may be a young, family-owned operation but they're in all of the Apple stores now; they've seen some incredible growth since they went to market a couple of years ago and Mikey's job is essentially to story tell and deliver a consistent brand message to new and existing fans of their product... all over the globe.

We met for coffee at the Herschel office in Railtown and swapped stories about the rare eye disease that we both randomly have ( is a piece I wrote about my experience with it), and at the end of our meeting an idea was sparked about a super cool community giving project which we're going to be launching with another partner in about 3 weeks. While you're waiting for the unveil, get acquainted with , which I think I already told you is currently one of my favourite brands in the world.

And stay tuned for more 50 Coffees!
