They did it!
After months of nail-biting anticipation and supporters voting as often as they could,has won the Search, Rescue and Emergency Services category of the 2023 Defender Service Awards.
The announcement was made at Iron Horse Ranch in Somerville, Texas on Saturday night.
Two Squamish SAR members were there for the gala to see if the local or the other finalist, the Texas SAR team, would take home the win in the Search and Rescue category.
The winner was decided by popular vote.
“We did it, Squamish! To everyone who voted for us from Squamish, Sea to Sky, and beyond, along with the Search and Rescue communities across the country, we are overwhelmed with gratitude. It was truly a team effort,” said Christy Allan, communications director for Squamish Search and Rescue, in a news release.
The team will bring back to Squamish a new customized Land Rover Defender 130 in addition to a US$25,000 donation and many in-kind Pelican products valued at over US$8,000.
Allan said SAR takes possession of the vehicle in spring 2024, once it is custom wrapped and kitted out for the local volunteers.
“We want to recognize the other finalists in our category. Texas SAR, Taos, Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, and Resources in Search and Rescue. We have the utmost respect for all that they do,” said Allan.
Allan said next up for Squamish Search and Rescue is the in Squamish on Saturday, Nov. 18, presented by Squamish's VentureWeb. All proceeds from that event and the online silent auction will go to Squamish Search and Rescue.
“It will be a great chance to celebrate our incredible community,” said Allan.
