The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in the province.

The province’s police watchdog has cleared the RCMP of any wrongdoing in the death of a Sooke man last summer.

The Independent Investigations Office said Sooke RCMP were called to a residence on Kemp Lake Road by a male who appeared to be in emotional distress on June 27 at 1:50 p.m.

The man was later found deceased.

The IIO said its general counsel reviewed the evidence — including police statements, 911 recordings and police radio transmissions — and determined “there is no causal connection between any action or inaction of an officer and the affected person’s death.

“Based on the available evidence, police actions could not have prevented this tragic death,” the IIO said in a statement.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in the province. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
