Reports of Oak Bay police snagging speeders on Beach Drive near Newport Avenue are nothing new, but a driver pulled over about 7:45 p.m. Saturday was clocked at 116 kilometres per hour — almost three times the speed limit of 40 km/h in the area.

The 32-year-old man at the wheel was given a ticket for excessive speed, complete with a $483 fine for being more than 60 km/h above the limit, and had his vehicle towed from the scene for a week-long impoundment.

Excessive speed penalties kick in at 40 km/h over the speed limit with a $368 fine and jump to $483 at 60 km/h or more over the limit.

Two days prior, an officer at the same spot was alerted by a roaring engine about 5:20 p.m. and pulled over a driver calculated to have been travelling at 96 km/h.

In that case, the driver — 19-year-old with a novice licence — came away with a $368 fine and the same consequences of towing and impoundment.
