Several hundred people rallied at the legislature grounds on Saturday (March 27) to protest the logging of old-growth forests in B.C.

Rally organizers said ancient forests are being cleared at an alarming rate despite provincial government promises to protect the forests. They say that if logging continues at current rates, B.C. lose will lose its old-growth forests within a few years.

The forest industry should instead focus on harvesting second-growth trees in a sustainable way and to scale back the exporting of raw logs.

Provincial officials have said that logging concerns have to be balanced against economic issues and worries about the loss of jobs, and talks are being held to consider deferring some logging.
