Health Canada is recalling over 70,000 Fitbit smartwatches sold across the country due to a burn hazard.
The battery in the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a risk of burn injuries to the user, according to the joint recall notice issued Wednesday with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Profeco and Fitbit LLC.
People should immediately stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatch and contact Fitbit LLC for a refund.
.
Health Canada said 70,561 of the affected Ionic smartwatches were sold in Canada between August 2017 and August 2020. Around one million of the smartwatches were sold in the U.S. and 5,073 were sold in Mexico.
As of Feb. 15, the company has not received any reports of incidents in Canada or Mexico, however, there have been at least 115 reports of the battery overheating in the U.S., Health Canada said.
In a statement, Fitbit said it was conducting the voluntary recall of its Ionic smartwatches "out of an abundance of caution," and noted that it had received "a very limited number of injury reports," which represent less than 0.01 per cent of units sold globally.
"These incidents are very rare and this voluntary recall does not impact other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers," Fitbit said.
