One driver was killed and the other suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash on the Nanaimo Parkway on Saturday.
Nanaimo RCMP said the collision happened about 8:30 p.m. between the Dunster Road overpass and the Doumont Road bridge.
Witnesses told police that a car travelling south crossed the median and hit a northbound SUV. The highway is divided between Dunster and Doumont by a wide grassy median.
The driver and lone occupant in the SUV died after being transported to hospital, while the driver of the car — who was also alone in the vehicle — was taken to hospital with injuries police described as non-life threatening.
Investigators, including an RCMP collision analyst, were at the scene for much of the night and the parkway was shut down in both directions for a considerable period.
Police are asking to hear from anyone who saw what happened and has not spoken to police, or who has dashcam or other video — including footage of southbound vehicles coming from the Nanoose area from 8 to 8:30 p.m.
