COVID-19 discovered at three Burnaby grocery stores as part of new Lower Mainland wave

More Burnaby grocery stores are seeing staff members test positive for COVID-19.

The latest case is a worker at the Real Canadian Superstore in Metropolis at Metrotown, who last worked a shift on March 27. The case was only revealed on Friday by Loblaw.

This follows the Safeway at 6564 East Hastings St. in Burnaby announcing a new case with the employee last working on March 28.

Two Burnaby businesses are grappling with fresh COVID-19 cases – with customers being warned to watch for symptoms.

In the Metrotown area, grocery seller Wholesale Club, 5335 Kingsway, Burnaby has had a case discovered involving one of their staff members. The last day the team member worked was on March 23.

Fraser Health has also issued a warning about a COVID-19 exposure at a Burnaby beauty salon.

The health authority posted on its website a notification about First Hair and Beauty Studio, warning customers and staff who were at this location from March 23-25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The business is located at 7639 – Sixth St. in the Edmonds neighbourhood.

Anyone who was there on those dates is advised to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, said Fraser Health.

More grocery store chains operating in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and across British Columbia are also reporting several new employee coronavirus (COVID-19) cases.

Sobeys Inc, which operates familiar B.C. chains like Safeway, Thrifty Foods, and FreshCo, added new store staff infections to its  on March 31, including one that reflects an additional case at a North Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­store. The new cases are as follows:

  • Thrifty Foods - 3210 Edgemont Blvd, North Vancouver: Employee last worked on March 27, 2021

Sobeys says it intends to continue to update its case tracker for transparency and as soon as information is made available. "Out of respect for our teammates and their confidentiality, we will never release any personal information about our people. We will always do everything we can to support our teammates and ensure their safety. Where required, we will communicate with customers who have shopped in the impacted location, with store signage, outlining our steps to manage the situation," adds the company.

Loblaw Companies Ltd, the parent company of retail chains Shoppers Drug Mart and Real Canadian Superstore provided updates to its COVID-19  on April 1, indicating additional cases among staff at B.C. stores that had previously reported cases this week.

Those stores include the Davie Street Your Independent Grocer in Vancouver, Park Royal City Market in North Vancouver, Real Canadian Superstore at 2332 – 160 St. in Surrey, Sewak's Your Independent Grocer, where three store employees have now become infected with the virus, and the Real Canadian Superstore in Mission, where a second team member has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Loblaw. Other cases have been flagged at a Shoppers Drug Mart in West Kelowna and a Superstore in Prince George.
