Health Canada is notifying consumers that a brand of multi-surface cleaner is being recalled from the marketplace due to a risk of exposure to bacteria.
A safety notification issued Thursday (Oct. 26) states that the recall involves Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaner in the scents Lavender Clean, Lemon Fresh, and Mandarin Sunrise due to a microbial hazard.
Pine-Sol Original (pine scent) and Pine-Sol Scented Multi-surface Cleaner in Rainforest Dew® and Spring Blossom® scents are not included in the recall, however.
The recalled products may contain bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is an environmental organism found widely in soil and water.
Health Canada says people with weakened immune systems or external medical devices who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment.
The bacteria can enter the body "if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin."
Typically, people with healthy immune systems are not affected by the bacteria. So far, the company hasn't received any reports of illness in Canada.
The date code number can be found on the bottle between the label and the cap. Only products with date codes that begin with the prefix “A4” and are less than 222490000 are included in this recall.
