A cat is the top dog at Port Moody's Yellow Dog Brewing Co.

Mickey the cat is the first-place winner of the brewery's second annual "Make My Pet a Yellow Dog Brewing Star" contest.

The black-and-white tuxedo feline will be featured on the cans of its limited edition Starborn beer, along with the three runners up, Austin, Doper and Archie. They’re all dogs.

The contest, which opened on Sept. 5, challenged Yellow Dog's fans to raise money for the BC SPCA, with aluminum can stardom awarded to the top three finishers and a spot on the fourth can of the four-packs going to the selection from a random draw of all fundraisers. The beer will be available across the province soon.

In total, the event collected $230,564.

"You blew this year's SPCA Make My Pet a Yellow Dog star out of the water," said the brewery on its Facebook page.

"People love the idea of having their pet’s faces on the cans," said Yellow Dog's Melinda Coghill in a news release.

"You are all heroes," added a statement on the BC SPCA's website.

The organization operates 36 animal care centres across the province, as well as animal hospitals in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and Penticton, two spay/neuter clinics and a wildlife rehabilitation centre on Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Island.

Yellow Dog's sudsy efforts to help community groups isn't limited to animals; it's also produced to raise money for SHARE Family and Community Services.
